"Sept. 11 reopens the wounds for many," says Grace Burley, project manager at Atlanta-based Crisis Management International, a consulting firm that helps companies deal with crisis preparedness, response, and recovery.

"The first anniversary [of a company’s crisis] remains an important challenge as managers determine how to ensure the overall health of the company," adds Mary Cardin, CMI’s vice president of operations.

Burley and Cardin offer this advise to managers during tough times:

• If lives were lost during a company crisis, company leaders should distribute a message of sympathy to all, acknowledging the anniversary's significance.
• Acknowledge that the anniversary will not be a typical workday and encourage employees not to isolate themselves.
• Recommend positive group actions, like creating a memorial or doing volunteer work.
